We now have H1N1
(Swine Flu) Intranasal Mist vaccine
available for any patients
over the age of 2 yrs, or their parents (under
the age of 49 yrs) who would like to
receive it. Please
call the office to schedule an appointment for
this.
The H1N1 intranasal vaccine is a
live-virus (attenuated) and
not recommended for
patients with asthma or any chronic medical
condition.
For H1N1
(Swine Flu) Shots (Injectable), please
call our office to have your name placed on our
waiting list. We will call you to schedule
an appointment when vaccine becomes available.
If your child has
not yet been vaccinated and meets the criteria
for "high risk" (See below) please let us know
when you call so that they will be placed at the
top of the list.
We are still awaiting shipment of
Seasonal (Influenza) Flu
Shots at this time. However, we do
not anticipate
receiving any more FluMist (Intranasal Form) at this
time. Please check this website frequently for
updates.

October

We FINALLY
received our first shipment of the Flu Shot for
those 3 years and older today. We also still
have the pediatric dose in stock, but are now
out of the FluMist (Nasal/Live Virus) Remember, the "flu
shot" is for INFLUENZA, a respiratory illness,
and is recommended for everyone 6 months and
older .

We anticipate
having the Novel H1N1 (Swine Flu) Vaccine for
our patients when it becomes available,
and will post more information and the most
current
recommendations here, so please continue to check back! Right
now, pregnant women, and direct caregivers of
children under 6 months old are highest on the
priority list to receive the vaccine. There will
be both a nasal version and an injectable
version available.
NOTE: If you got the Flu Mist and want to get
the Nasal version of the swine flu vaccine, you
need to wait at least 1 month before doing so.
This does not apply
if you got the injectable version of the regular
flu shot.
Swine
Flu Update:
Information on this changes constantly, but we
are following the CDC recommendations when it
comes to evaluation and treatment of patients.
This means that if your
child meets the proper criteria, we will
test them and, if appropriate, treat with
available anti-virals. However, this does not
mean we will call in anti-viral prescriptions
for everyone with cold or allergy symptoms, as
overuse of these medications also can lead to
resistance, just like we see with antibiotics. Prevention is still
key, so make sure to continue to insist on good
hand washing and other basic infection control
measures for you and your family!
March

FYI: Guidelines for dealing with vomiting and
diarrhea are posted on the Parent Info Page.

* Might want to
check out the website "kentuckianamoms.com" for
"mom-friendly" local information. We hope to add it to
our recommendation page, but have to make sure it is
okay to do so. Suggestions for links from our parents
are always welcome!
* We believe that the "glitches" in our after hours
phone service are now fixed, but if you do have
any trouble with leaving a
message for the MD on call
after hours (urgent matters only) please let us know
ASAP. Non-emergent/ urgent calls should be made during
regular office hours so that we can maximize care for
all of our families.

*You now can access and print several forms that
we commonly need to have completed (or may refer to) on
the "Forms" page. We hope that you will utilize these
as needed. Right now you will need to print them out and
bring them in with you, or fax them to our office at
502-245-7663. Some tabs are not active yet, but the
associated forms will be added soon!

*We now have
FLU SHOTS for all ages, and are happy
to give them to parents too ... especially if it will
save you an extra trip! Flu Mist (the nasal spray
version) is also available to healthy children (3 years
and over) and adults. AGAIN, the flu shot is not a
live virus, and only protects against certain strains of
Influenza (the flu) ... you CANNOT get
Influenza from the shot ... but that
doesn't mean you won't get sick with
another type of viral illness this winter! We recommend
it for all kids 6 months and older.
*Dosing Chart has been modified based on
recent concerns with cough and cold medications for kids
under 6 years old. Note that antihistamine use (i.e.
Benadryl) is still okay ... and often drying up
secretions helps lessen the other symptoms anyway! |
